Adhesives
Chempilots provides formulation and qualification of special adhesives. These are typically used when off-the-shelf products cannot provide the specific set of properties required by the customer.
Adhesives challenges
Our work with adhesive products has included skin adhesives, controlled drug delivery systems, assembly adhesives and potting compounds – all specifically designed to meet special requirements. Typical challenges have been:
- Biocompatibility and wet-peeling issues in relation to skin contact
- Surface compliance and pre-treatments in relation to substrates of polymers, latex, rubbers, and metals, (e.g. cleaning and modification by plasma and irradiation)
- Investigations of failure-modes and related solution-finding
- Processing issues such as dispensing, speed of drying and curing, and sterilization
Formulation capabilities
When formulating adhesives, we often modify traditional adhesives ingredients or introduce non-traditional ingredients. If necessary, we synthesize new polymers to obtain special functionalities in the adhesive. Many different types of adhesives can be formulated:
- Solvent-based systems, e.g. organic polymeric solutions, latex slurries, and foams
- Hot-melt systems based on thermoplastic compounds, resins, and fillers
- Chemical- and UV-curing systems such as isocyanates, epoxies, polyurethane, and acrylics
Adhesives processing competences
Our competences include:
- Enhancing processing features, e.g. increase adhesive solution viscosity to cope with high-speed processing requirements
- Hot-melt technology, e.g. mixing and coating with flat nozzle or extruder head
- Casting technology for solvent based adhesive systems
- Foaming adhesives technology
- Application technologies regarding drying/curing, adhesive dispensing, and transfer techniques
