Implants

For more than 25 years Chempilots has worked with biocompatible polymers intended for implantation into the human body. We have worked with leading medical device companies in engineering unique product characteristics and developing innovative technologies.

Chempilots holds several patents related to medical implants and has published and lectured on the subject for a range of scientific-technical groups.

Development of biocompatible polymeric implants
We have contributed to the development of biocompatible polymeric implants and processing technologies for various applications. Examples of application areas are:

  • Soft tissue filler for aesthetic correction and reconstruction surgery (Aquamid® and Aquamid-Recon®)
  • Urethral bulking agent to treat urinary incontinence (Bulkamid®)
  • Biodegradable viscoelastic supplements for cartilage support in case of osteoarthritis
  • Hydrogels for ophthalmic application, e.g. intra-ocular lenses (IOL)
  • Polymer membranes for use in subcutaneous biosensors for e.g. glucose monitoring
  • Dental low-shrink plastic filler for substitution of amalgam
  • Orthopedic adhesives to anchor knee and hip implants
Hemostatic and anti-adherent agents for abdominal surgery

Customized biomaterials
We have experience with advanced, commercially available medical-grade plastics. We also customize polymers to obtain desired functionalities including biocompatibility requirements. Our processing competences include:

  • Polymer modification, e.g. chemical hydrolysis, irradiation, polymer blending and compounding
  • Polymer synthesis from monomers, including cross-linking by chemical and physical means
  • Polymer refining, e.g. down-stream fractionation, extraction, dissolution/swelling, drying and curing
  • Filler fictionalization by chemical or physical surface modification
  • Polymer shaping, e.g. by cutting, dispersing, molding
  • Product packaging and sterilization

Research network
In addition to our own well-equipped laboratories, we also collaborate with universities and recognized pre-clinical CRO labs and hospital units working in experimental surgery.

We can facilitate focused multidisciplinary research input that helps identify good polymer candidates for a specific type of implant. We also help determine the feasibility of surgical procedures.

Polymeric implants - from samples to production
We prepare polymeric implantation materials in our labs on prototype equipment in order to gain early evidence of product functionality and technology feasibility.

We will supply samples for pre-clinical tests complying with GLP requirements.

We can upscale processes with emphasis on critical pathways, provide process variability studies, and transfer technology to our customers’ own premises. If desired, we can establish a pilot production line for operation in our own clean rooms.
